Drowned in a Well
Last Tuesday an inquest was held at the Duke of Cumberland public house, Over, before C.W.Palmer, Esq., deputy coroner,
concerning the death of Ann Elwood, whose
body was found in a well situate near to the house in which she lived. The deceased, who was the widow of a labourer, and was 79
years of age resided with her brother-in-law,
Ephraim Elwood - Susan Metcalfe, wife of a gardener said the deceased was her mother. She used to attend upon deceased, and
on Monday evening, about half past eight, she saw her safely in bed. She then seemed cheerful, and quite comfortable. Between
six and seven o'clock on Tuesday morning Ephraim Elwood came and told her
that the deceased was missing. Witness and Mrs. Raby went in search, and on going to the well saw the body of deceased. She
appeared to be standing, her mouth seeming to be in the water. The lid of the well was shut down on Monday night. The deceased
lost her daughter about three months ago, and since then she had appeared very depressed in spirits. Ephraim Elwood, the
brother-in-law, said the deceased seemed cheerful when he bade her goodnight on Monday and had been so all the day. On
getting up about five next morning he knocked at deceased's door to ask her how she was, but receiving no reply he went into the
room. He found deceased was not there, nor could
he make her hear in the yard, so he went to her daughter, Mrs. Metcalfe, who with Mrs. Raby went in search of the deceased and
found her as described. He found the door
undone when he got up. It was not usual for the deceased to get up before him. P.C. Jacklin stated that on getting the deceased out
of the well she was quite dead. Mr. C.P.
Daniell, surgeon, said there were no external marks of violence on the body, and he was of the opinion that the deceased died from
asphyxia, caused by drowning. The
deceased had been in a poor state of health for years. The jury returned an open verdict of "found drowned".
