On arrival in Australia Jabez was taken into temporary employment by the Government. Bounty per head 18 pounds 16 shillings
and children per head 9 pounds 7 shillings. Total bounty for whole family was 65 pounds 9 shillings. On arrival a residence was
secured with postal address care Mr Windle, Wellington St Chippendale Sydney.

In 1847 Jabez was working by day as a smith at the gaol and conducting a school for adults, 12 in number, at his home each night
and Mary his wife had a day school with 26 children in the class. Apart from school fees, he was getting a pound per week and they
were living comfortably. Jabez was smith-in-charge of the preliminary work for the construction of the first state railway to
Parramatta. It is claimed that he pounded the new anvil with the new hammer striking the first blow for the railway.

After the death of his wife, Jabez moved to Wingen in the Hunter Valley where he took charge of a school and a small farm in the
neighbouring valley. Jabez had a small school built at the railway construction camp prior to the public school being established at
Boggabri in 1883. He conducted a day school near the first railway bridge south of Boggabri

Died 03/12/1885 at Keepit, Manilla, NSW, Australia (F)
Died of natural causes. Said to be buried in Old Carroll Cemetery in northern NSW between Gunnedah and Tamworth but no grave
or headstone to be found. Informant Henry Bradley.
